The company has been proclaimed as one of 2008's "100 Best Companies to Work For" by Fortune magazine. And guess what? It's CarMax's fourth consecutive year to be included in Fortune magazine's high-status list! According to my source, CarMax is positioned at the 46th spot on the list for this year which has improved compared to last year's ranking of no. 88.

GM Keeps Pace With Toyota Says CEO

General Motors is keeping pace with Toyota in developing vehicles powered by alternative-energy sources said CEO Rick Wagoner.

"We're right in that race," the CEO said in an interview at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. "Right now we are rapidly expanding our offers" of vehicles powered by such alternatives as gasoline-electric engines and a gasoline-ethanol mix."

The Detroit-based automaker has been concentrating on how to rebuild its image on fuel-saving initiatives as the Japanese automaker, backed by a green credo, has increased sales in a declining American market. Over the next four years, the automaker aims to launch about one hybrid vehicle every three months.

GM isn't "perceived as being fully competitive on hybrids," said John O'Dell, the senior editor for Edmunds.com's Green Car Advisor website.

Wagoner conceded that Toyota had a "good start in gasoline-electric" vehicles. GM's hybrids are now on par with Toyota's, he said, and GM is testing hydrogen-powered autos. Toyota's Prius sedan remained the best-selling hybrid in America in 2007 as sales surged 69% to 181,221, according to Windsor Star.

The Cadillac prototype unveiled last Tuesday, called the Provoq, would be able to travel up to 300 miles on a tank of hydrogen, GM said. The Provoq, which runs on a combination of fuel-cell technology and lithium batteries and is built on the same chassis as the Volt, is designed as the automaker's latest push into environmentally friendly autos. MarketWatch stressed.

"The higher-end Provoq was built under the Cadillac brand in an effort to capitalize on the brand's image for luxury," Wagoner said. "At its core, Cadillac is all about luxury," he noted. "So it is fitting that our premium brand would be propelled by our most advanced technology."

Wagoner said that he is "shooting" to produce the Chevrolet Volt plug-in electric vehicle in 2010. "There's good progress" on the battery and electronics, said Wagoner, "but breakthroughs are needed."

Local Nevada Man Named National Hero Award Semifinalist

Motor vehicle accidents are the main cause of death for teenagers ranging from ages 15 to 21 in the United States. But someone has stepped up to reduce these types of cases and save lives through his ground-breaking driver's education program! Jeff Payne, a Las Vegas native, educates youth how to prevent vehicle collisions and drive carefully. The program is called "Driver's Edge," which effectively kept thousands of young adults unharmed on the streets. Today, Jeff Payne has been recognized as one of the country's top 40 heroes and is a great contender to win "America's Greatest Hometown Hero" in the 6th Annual Volvo for life Awards

"My goal for Driver's Edge is to continue expanding and teaching teenagers' life-saving driving techniques, but Edge is not about individual achievement. Edge is a team effort; our success simply wouldn't be possible without the help of our dedicated professional instructors, our partners and sponsors, and the willingness of young adults and parents nationwide to take a stand against the number one killer of America's youth. A Volvo for life Award would give the program an incredible boost and opportunity to reach our goal," says Jeff Payne.

The Bubble Car

http://www.motorionline.com/public/Album/Honda/puyo/honda_puyo_concept.jpg
We know that the Tokyo Motor Show is the vent to visit if you want to see really amazing concept cars. Japanese automakers are known for thinking outside the box when it comes to the design and the technology used on their concept cars.  And the Honda Puyo is one of them.

The Puyo is what I call a bubble car simply because it looks like a bubble and it is a car, a concept car, but a car nonetheless.  According to the automaker, Puyo is the Japanese onomatopoeia which "expresses the sensation of touching the vehicle's soft body".

And why is it soft?  It is because of the fact that it is made of soft materials.  That means it is safe for pedestrians.  Another great thing about this concept car is that it glows in the dark.  That means it will be very easy to spot it at night thus reducing the risk of nighttime collision.

The Puyo is not only great because of its appearance.  It is also a great car because it is powered by hydrogen.  Hydrogen when used as fuel only produces water vapor making it a great replacement for petroleum fuel.

Green vehicles are the rage these days and it would be really cool if Honda can mass produce this car.  If this is mass produced, I am sure that you will be worrying about where to have it refilled since it runs on hydrogen. The answer to that is Honda's Home Energy Station which allows consumers to provide fuel for hydrogen-powered vehicles right at their own homes.  As you can see, the future of green vehicles invading the auto market is close at hand.  For now though, we can only wait.

Beware Of Speed Traps

You know what speed traps are, right? I'm sure that you want to keep as far away from them as possible.  With Thanksgiving just around the corner, you might be planning to drive home. If you are going cross country to visit your hometown, chances are, you will encounter a lot of speed traps.  So in order for you to have a less expensive roadtrip this upcoming holiday, the folks at the National Motorists Association came up with a list of cities across the country notorious for speed traps.

Speed traps are areas where there is an unusually high number of speeding tickets issued to passing motorists.  These are locations where speed limits are not posted where motorists can readily see them.  There are also locations where the speed limit is excessively low and does not justify the location.  So if you are on the road and you do not know that there is a speed limit there, you would be putting the pedal to the metal while police officers lie in wait to ticket you for speeding.

So if you don't want to pay for numerous speeding tickets, you might want to go over the list provided by this site to give you an idea in what city you need to be extra wary of speed traps. With that list, you can carefully plot your route so that you will not be encountering any speed traps.  There are also ways how you can fight speed traps.  For that, you can visit this site which is dedicated to fighting speed traps.  The site will tell you how to fight a speeding ticket by not pleading guilty, knowing the law, requesting information from authorities, and others.

Slipstream Wins Design Award

http://www.theautochannel.com/news/2007/11/15/071317.1-lg.jpg
At the ongoing Los Angeles Auto Show, the Volkswagen Slipstream design sketch was named as the winner of the Los Angeles Auto Show 2007 Design Challenge.  The said contest is open to all exhibitors and the theme is to create a design sketch of future vehicles.  Eight design automotive studios participated and Slipstream was named as the best creation.  The organizers wanted the participants to create a design of vehicles which will be attractive to consumers 50 years from now.

According to the judges, Slipstream stood out from the rest because of the fact that it is designed integrating personal and work life in mind.  Innovative features also made the design appealing to the judges. The Slipstream is a tear shaped two-wheeled pod which travels in an upright position.  It can travel at a much higher speed by tilting horizontally.

"Thinking 50 years in the future using autonomous driving and artificial intelligence was challenging for our design team," said Derek Jenkins, the Chief of Volkswagen Design according to The Auto Channel. "We truly enjoyed participating in the Design Challenge and winning is a definite plus," he added.

According to the report, here are the things that the judges look for in the designs:  "originality of creative concept, integration of robotics and level of adaptation to a variety of environmental conditions and consumer needs."

Chuck Pelly, the director of Design Los Angeles, said:  "The scope of the entries was very impressive and in the end it came down to which team had the most innovative and fun design that could be best applied to a daily lifestyle.  Volkswagen's designers showed passion and ultimately created a brighter vision of 2057."

The only question now is whether this vehicle will actually make it into production.

Honda American Plant Celebrates 25 Years

Oh yeah, the very first American plant of Honda Motor Co. turned 25. The milestone has brought the automaker to a leadership position in the United States.

Aside from that, another milestone is yet to unfold later this month. The plant will also be celebrating the production of its nine-millionth vehicle.

Associates recently introduced the 8th-generation Honda Accord at the plant. The Accord was the first vehicle manufactured at the plant. And it remains the plant's core product. America is the most important market for the Accord by far, with sales of over 300,000 units through September, mostly built in the Marysville Auto Plant. Almost 80% of all Honda and Acura product lines sold in America are manufactured at 1 of Honda's 6 auto plants in North America.

At 25 years, the Marysville plant and its associates continue as a driving force for Honda and the auto industry. Honda brought its unique brand of teamwork and associate involvement to manufacturing when it established Honda of America Mfg., Inc. near Marysville to begin motorcycle manufacturing in 1979, The Auto Channelreported. Success of that startup quickly led that same year to the bold decision to build an auto plant as well. At the time, the company was still a relative newcomer to the automobile business and only a fraction the size of Japan's established automakers.

"People are always asking why Honda has been so successful," said Honda of America President Akio Hamada. "The answer is simple: our associates. Their involvement and teamwork to achieve the highest quality for our customers and improve our operations have continuously driven us forward to higher levels and greater achievements."

Honda's automotive experience in Ohio became the model for Honda globally, Hamada said, in terms of local production, developing a local supplier network and recognizing the importance of working closely with communities. "We have been building cars in Ohio since 1982," he added. "This has been possible because we have grown together with communities like Marysville."

The Accord was a much simpler product then, said Tim Hines, who was among the first associates at the auto plant. "While getting ready for mass production, we were producing maybe six cars per day, really focusing on assuring quality on every part of the vehicles," Hines said. "Those were perfect cars, because we were learning to build quality first, and then the product."

At present, the plant has the capacity to manufacture 440,000 vehicles annually on 2 lines. And the automaker has now added production of light trucks. In addition to the Accord sedan and coupe, they manufacture the Acura TL luxury sedan, and the Acura RDX SUV.

"The Marysville Auto Plant may be 25 years old on the outside, but it is a new plant on the inside," said Plant Manager Sam Harpest. "It has always been changing, and there isn't a more flexible plant in the industry with our level of quality and productivity."

"To the credit of our associates, this team carried out the most complicated model launch in our history," Harpest concluded. "No other plant in America has the flexibility and experienced workforce to build 6 different vehicles at the same time.”

Most Popular Car Color Goes To...

Silver! This one of a kind shade topped the charts as the most popular color for this year's car models all around the planet! Along with the top choice, other colors are gaining popularity as well and they are starting to emerge as constant leaders on the charts. The study was conducted by the PPG Industries, the world's number one manufacturer of vehicle coatings. The results of the PPG's annual automotive color popularity data revealed that silver is losing some firepower while the shade of black is closely trailing the all-time favorite. Brighter hues such as blue, red and niche market colors seem to be in the position for a revival.

According to PPG, silver seized the top place as the most renowned car color at 31.5 percent (down from 33 percent in 2006) worldwide. On the other hand, black hopped to 18 percent (from 15.4 percent in 2006) to earn second place. Trailing black is white with (12.5 percent), blue (12.4 percent), red (8.8 percent), naturals (gold, orange and brown tones, 6.6 percent), other/niche market colors (5.9 percent) and green (3.8 percent).

"Silver is popular with consumers and automakers because it accentuates the styling of a vehicle and looks modern while also having a high resale value. We're looking at new interpretations to emerge in tinted silvers and charcoal shades. In addition, hue-shifting pigments can really make silvers look unique," says Jane E. Harrington, PPG manager, color styling, automotive coatings.

"Today's consumers are aware of trends and design, and they expect to see that reflected in the vehicles they buy." Harrington added.

Harrington added that automakers realize the right color "can get you noticed," and said that a survey PPG conducted at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit showed more than 65 percent of consumers surveyed said they would select one vehicle over another if more color choices were available. "Consumers want choices, and that will lead to a more colorful automotive future."

"Our focus for this year's global color show explores effect pigments. To remain a leader in color design, our methods must be outside the normal mode of thinking. PPG continues to create unique ways of using effect pigments that result in innovative looks and add a new dimension to color and technology," says Jerry R. Koenigsmark, PPG manager of color design, North America automotive coatings.

The Search Engine Fatigue

The Web has done a lot of things for us. For auto buyers, it is one good tool to use. It is reported that 90 percent of new car buyers are making their research online first before actually visiting a dealership. Experts recommend this approach as this will save consumers a lot of time and effort.  Indeed, the old fashioned way of visiting dealership after dealership is gone.  But are consumers satisfied with the information that they can find on the Internet?  Apparently not.  That's according to a recent study conducted by Kelton Research commissioned by Autobytel Inc.

The survey found out that 72 percent of consumers using the Web to search for pertinent information that they can use when buying a car are experiencing the so-called "search engine fatigue".  This means that these people becomes impatient or frustrated to the point that they will leave their computer alone without having found the information that they want.  This is the fatigue experienced by person who fails to find right away what they are looking for.

Forty percent of the respondents said that finding "right and relevant" auto information on big search engines such as Google and Yahoo is downright overwhelming and a waste of time. Here's another interesting figure: nearly 25 percent of al the respondents said that they have even put off buying a new vehicle because they found the car-buying process to be overwhelming and frustrating.

Actually, this is not surprising as the amount of information related to the auto industry that one can find on the Web is stagerring.  Consider this:  there are a lot of major automakers out there, European, American, and Asian.  These automakers produce different nameplates and new models of a certain nameplate every year.  They also have luxury divisions like Japanese automakers.  Prices for these vehicles are already a staggering amount of information.  There are also prices for used cars.  Aside from prices, reviews also add to that amount of information available on the Web.  Safety ratings, gas mileage, and whatnot also add to it.

With all that information to be considered, it is not surprising that more and more consumers are finding it hard to find out the information that they really need. Thirty-six percent of the respondents even said that they have to visit different sites just to get the information that they need in order to decide on which car to buy.

This site to site visit has replaced the dealership to dealership visit today. This survey hopefully catches the attention of sitemakers so that they can design a better site which will make it easier for consumers to get the information that they want readily.
