New Battery Lineup Launched
Green cars are good. But if you want a really green car, you should have a really good battery pack. Today, hybrids use nickel-metal hydride battery packs. These are pretty good but not as good as lithium-ion batteries. Li-ion batteries are better because it weighs less than a similarly sized Ni-MH battery. With hybrids designed to be as light as possible, it is good to have a lightweight battery. That's one point for the Li-ion. Apart from that, a Li-ion battery pack can store more power than a Ni-MH battery. This means that indeed, Li-ion is the future of electric car power source. But even with a lot of professionals at work on the development of Li-ion batteries for automotive application, they are yet to find a way to make it safe for the bumps and vibrations in a car. But Lithium Technology Corporation has found a way to create a battery pack for automotive application. Recently, the company announced the launch of a new lineup of Li-ion batteries. These batteries have been developed for electric vehicles according to Lithium Technology CEO Dr. Klaus Brandt. "We developed this product to power the new breed of EV's and for the fleet EV market that has been promoted recently all over the world," said Brandt. Brandt also pointed out that the new battery pack has also set the bar higher for other companies. "In recent years LTC has been developing and offering battery technology that is unmatched by any other battery power solution on the market,' said Brandt. "Today we are launching a product line that will complete our offering to the various markets we are targeting. We continue to prove our technical superiority and with the new iron phosphate products we raised the bar again," he added.

AAA: How To Cope With The Cold
I bet no one would dare argue with me that A in AAA Michigan could possibly mean triple A-ssistance (just a wild guess, actually). AAA stands for the American Automobile Association, a federation of automobile clubs aimed at providing emergency road services such as auto buying, repair and others. They receive about 2, 624 calls requesting for, you said it right, assistance - particularly from stranded motorists. So yesterday, at Autochannel, AAA gave some tips to car owners on how to keep their vehicles on the road amidst the cold weather. First, AAA advised that the car battery's strength must be checked because faulty batteries are a major cause of car starting problems. Second, they suggest that cars be parked in the garage to protect it from strong winds. A tarp or plastic trash bag can be good alternatives too. Also, it would be best if the fuel tank be kept at least half-full to prevent fuel-line from solidifying. In addition, nothing beats being prepared, so buy a lubricant in any auto supply stores to evade frozen door locks. In case it does, heat the key using a pocket lighter or hold a jug containing hot water against the door panel. Finally, AAA reminded stranded motorists to stay with their vehicles since it makes a good shelter from the cold (As if you have a choice). "Starting the engine can help to keep warm and make sure the exhaust pipe is snow free," AAA said. For easy location, it is imperative that cellphones be brought always in the car along with emergency supplies like boots, hats, blankets and other equipment need to fight the cold. By following these tips from AAA, you're simply applying the concept, "Expect the best but prepare for the worst." I bet, you agree with me.

Giving 'Til It Hurts, The Ford Way
Amid the economic crisis it's going through from the previous year up until now, the Ford Motor Company never ceases to share its blessings with those whom the company believes are more broke than they are. Reports from The Auto Channel said that through the Ford Motor Company Fund as lead sponsor for the Annual Dinner of the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, one of the 39 National Cancer Institute-designated cancer centers in the United States that is committed to a cancer-free future, the Institute was able to raise about $930,400 that helped support 6,000 new cancer patients who live with an annual budget of $216 million. "We are pleased to continue Ford's legacy of partnering with the Karmanos Cancer Institute in helping to provide needed care for cancer patients and their families. It's through partnerships like this that we're able to help make our communities better places to work and live," said Ford Motor Company Fund and Community Services President Jim Vella. Among Ford's community initiatives are the Silk Road Project, Ford Education center at Gettysburg, Habitat for Humanity, Volvo Encourages Student Leaders, Addressing HIV/AIDS and others. This year's dinner, the 26th since the Institute's foundation in 1982, will be held on May 17. Ford, the world's third largest automaker, next to General Motors and Toyota reported a net loss of $2.75 billion last year while restructuring its operations to regain profits in the auto market. According to the National Cancer Institute, an estimated 40,910 Americans died of breast cancer last year while there are about 180,510 new cases that occurred on the same year. Breast cancer is the cancer that develops in tissues of the breast, usually the ducts and lobules. It is the fifth most common cancer death worldwide. According to wikipedia, women in the US have a 1 in 33 chance of breast cancer causing their death.

GM Keeps Pace With Toyota Says CEO
General Motors is keeping pace with Toyota in developing vehicles powered by alternative-energy sources said CEO Rick Wagoner. "We're right in that race," the CEO said in an interview at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. "Right now we are rapidly expanding our offers" of vehicles powered by such alternatives as gasoline-electric engines and a gasoline-ethanol mix." The Detroit-based automaker has been concentrating on how to rebuild its image on fuel-saving initiatives as the Japanese automaker, backed by a green credo, has increased sales in a declining American market. Over the next four years, the automaker aims to launch about one hybrid vehicle every three months. GM isn't "perceived as being fully competitive on hybrids," said John O'Dell, the senior editor for Edmunds.com's Green Car Advisor website. Wagoner conceded that Toyota had a "good start in gasoline-electric" vehicles. GM's hybrids are now on par with Toyota's, he said, and GM is testing hydrogen-powered autos. Toyota's Prius sedan remained the best-selling hybrid in America in 2007 as sales surged 69% to 181,221, according to Windsor Star. The Cadillac prototype unveiled last Tuesday, called the Provoq, would be able to travel up to 300 miles on a tank of hydrogen, GM said. The Provoq, which runs on a combination of fuel-cell technology and lithium batteries and is built on the same chassis as the Volt, is designed as the automaker's latest push into environmentally friendly autos. MarketWatch stressed. "The higher-end Provoq was built under the Cadillac brand in an effort to capitalize on the brand's image for luxury," Wagoner said. "At its core, Cadillac is all about luxury," he noted. "So it is fitting that our premium brand would be propelled by our most advanced technology." Wagoner said that he is "shooting" to produce the Chevrolet Volt plug-in electric vehicle in 2010. "There's good progress" on the battery and electronics, said Wagoner, "but breakthroughs are needed."

Local Nevada Man Named National Hero Award Semifinalist
Motor vehicle accidents are the main cause of death for teenagers ranging from ages 15 to 21 in the United States. But someone has stepped up to reduce these types of cases and save lives through his ground-breaking driver's education program! Jeff Payne, a Las Vegas native, educates youth how to prevent vehicle collisions and drive carefully. The program is called "Driver's Edge," which effectively kept thousands of young adults unharmed on the streets. Today, Jeff Payne has been recognized as one of the country's top 40 heroes and is a great contender to win "America's Greatest Hometown Hero" in the 6th Annual Volvo for life Awards "My goal for Driver's Edge is to continue expanding and teaching teenagers' life-saving driving techniques, but Edge is not about individual achievement. Edge is a team effort; our success simply wouldn't be possible without the help of our dedicated professional instructors, our partners and sponsors, and the willingness of young adults and parents nationwide to take a stand against the number one killer of America's youth. A Volvo for life Award would give the program an incredible boost and opportunity to reach our goal," says Jeff Payne.

We know that the Tokyo Motor Show is the vent to visit if you want to see really amazing concept cars. Japanese automakers are known for thinking outside the box when it comes to the design and the technology used on their concept cars. And the Honda Puyo is one of them. The Puyo is what I call a bubble car simply because it looks like a bubble and it is a car, a concept car, but a car nonetheless. According to the automaker, Puyo is the Japanese onomatopoeia which "expresses the sensation of touching the vehicle's soft body". And why is it soft? It is because of the fact that it is made of soft materials. That means it is safe for pedestrians. Another great thing about this concept car is that it glows in the dark. That means it will be very easy to spot it at night thus reducing the risk of nighttime collision. The Puyo is not only great because of its appearance. It is also a great car because it is powered by hydrogen. Hydrogen when used as fuel only produces water vapor making it a great replacement for petroleum fuel. Green vehicles are the rage these days and it would be really cool if Honda can mass produce this car. If this is mass produced, I am sure that you will be worrying about where to have it refilled since it runs on hydrogen. The answer to that is Honda's Home Energy Station which allows consumers to provide fuel for hydrogen-powered vehicles right at their own homes. As you can see, the future of green vehicles invading the auto market is close at hand. For now though, we can only wait.
